A Different Grooming Experience

At Kailua Pets, grooming is approached differently.

Over more than 35 years working with dogs, I’ve learned that most dogs just need a minute to get to know us, at the door, and with a walk through the facility. I also know that many dogs struggle in highly stimulating environments filled with noise, rushing, barking, and constant activity.

Kailua Pets is a calmer, lower-stimulation space where dogs are encouraged to slow down, settle in, and build confidence with grooming through the trusting relationships we intentionally build by the choices we make at each step in the grooming process.

Some dogs relax immediately. Others need a little patience, guidance, and consistency before they begin to feel safe and comfortable in the process.

Our goal is not simply a finished groom, but a beautiful groom and grooming experience for your dog.
Our goal is that you dogs has fun and enjoys the experience, and the win/win that everyone feels good.

Quiet. Thoughtful. Relationship-based grooming designed around your dog’s comfort and success.

Why Kailua Pets Feels Different

Dogs are deeply influenced by their environment.

Many dogs come to associate grooming salons, veterinary offices, daycare, and kennel environments with heightened excitement and stimulation simply because those spaces are typically busy and noisy.

At Kailua Pets, we intentionally create a different rhythm.

The environment here is calmer, quieter, and more predictable. Dogs are encouraged to settle in, observe, decompress, and realize they are safe.

Many dogs who are vocal, overstimulated, or constantly “on” in busier environments gradually begin relaxing once they realize they do not need to compete with noise or activity around them.

Learning how to relax is a valuable life skill for many dogs, and grooming can become part of building that confidence and emotional balance over time.

What “Meeting Your Dog Where They Are” Really Means

Every dog experiences grooming differently.

Some walk in confident and ready to go. Others arrive unsure, overstimulated, highly social, sensitive, or simply uncertain about a new environment.

At Kailua Pets, we take time to help dogs settle in before grooming begins.

From the moment you walk through the door, the environment is intentionally designed to feel calm and welcoming. Soft calming essential oils are diffused in the background, and the entry area encourages a quieter arrival with space to sit, connect, and allow your dog to decompress before heading into the grooming area.

Rather than immediately rushing dogs onto a grooming table, we first take time to get acquainted. Once dogs have been here for a visit or 2, they often run and jump onto the table wagging their tails and ready to go! This is the goal and our personal joy!

Dogs first visit includes a walked through the facility and allowing time to sniff, explore, and become familiar with the grooming and bathing areas before we begin working with them. This helps many dogs feel more comfortable and confident because they are able to process the environment at their own pace.

And of course, treats help too.

A Partnership For The Long Term

The most successful grooming experiences happen when groomer, owner, and dog are all working together.

Regular brushing and coat maintenance at home, gentle handling of feet and ears, calm routines, and open communication all contribute to a more positive grooming experience over time.

The more we understand about your dog’s personality, sensitivities, routines, and past experiences, the better we are able to support them as an individual.

Every dog’s journey is different.

Some dogs settle into grooming quickly. Others need a little more patience, support, and time along the way.

Wherever your dog is in that process, our goal is to help them continue moving forward in a way that feels safe, respectful, and sustainable throughout their life.

Kailua Pets was created to provide a thoughtful, relationship-based grooming experience built around patience, emotional awareness, skill, and genuine respect for the dog.

We are grateful to work with owners who value this approach and who want the very best for their dogs, both physically and emotionally.

High Value Treats and a Fun Introduction

.We always keep a variety of high-value treats on hand, including favorites like Poi Dog Ahi, Smack freeze-dried food from Calvin & Susie’s, dehydrated beef liver, and chicken hearts. If your dog has dietary restrictions or a favorite treat from home, we always encourage you to bring a small amount with you.

At Kailua Pets, we are intentionally creating a different kind of grooming experience — a new normal where we slow things down, pay attention to the individual dog, and choose the path that best supports their physical comfort, emotional well-being, and long-term success with grooming.

 When Dogs Need Additional Support

As we move through the grooming process, there are times when we may discover that a dog needs additional support before grooming can safely continue.

Severe matting, heavily impacted ears, fragile or irritated skin, physical discomfort, or emotional overwhelm can all affect how safely and comfortably a dog is able to participate in grooming.

At Kailua Pets, we never want dogs pushed through an experience their body or emotional state is struggling to manage.

As groomers, we work very closely with dogs and often notice changes in skin, coat, ears, comfort level, or behavior. At the same time, we deeply respect the training and expertise of veterinarians and recognize that some situations require veterinary evaluation before grooming can safely continue.

Some dogs may also benefit from additional support outside of grooming itself, including handling practice, confidence-building, training support, or thoughtful scheduling adjustments as they learn to feel more comfortable with the process. We are not focused on simply getting through one appointment.
We are building a long-term relationship with your dog with the goal of helping them become more comfortable, confident, and successful with grooming throughout their life.

Medication, Sedation & Nervous Dogs

We understand that many owners worry about how their dog will handle grooming, especially if their dog has struggled in the past.

For that reason, we ask that you please do not give sedatives, calming medications, or supplements before grooming without first discussing them with us or scheduling a meet-and-greet beforehand.

While medication can sometimes be appropriate under veterinary guidance, it can also change how a dog experiences and responds to grooming.

Dogs may still feel anxious or uncomfortable while medicated, but their reactions can become delayed, muted, or less predictable. This can make it more difficult for the groomer to recognize stress early and may reduce our ability to truly connect with and support the dog emotionally during the process.

Whenever possible, we prefer to first give dogs the opportunity to build trust, form relationships, and learn that grooming can feel calm, safe, and manageable.

Many dogs who initially struggle with grooming go on to become very successful once they are given patience, consistency, compassion, and the space to settle into the experience at their own pace.
