A Different Grooming Experience
At Kailua Pets, grooming is approached differently.
With more than 35 years of experience working with dogs, I’ve learned that many dogs simply need a thoughtful introduction, a calm environment, and a little time to understand that they are safe.
Kailua Pets was created as a calmer, lower-stimulation grooming space where dogs are encouraged to slow down, settle in, and build confidence through trust.
Some dogs relax immediately. Others need patience, guidance, and consistency before they begin to feel comfortable in the process.
Our goal is not only a beautiful finished groom. Our goal is for your dog to feel safe, supported, and increasingly comfortable with grooming over time.
Quiet. Thoughtful. Relationship-based grooming designed around your dog’s comfort and success.

Why Kailua Pets Feels Different
Dogs are deeply influenced by their environment.
Many dogs come to associate grooming salons, veterinary offices, daycare, and kennel environments with heightened excitement and stimulation simply because those spaces are typically busy and noisy.
At Kailua Pets, we intentionally create a different rhythm.
The environment here is calmer, quieter, and more predictable. Dogs are encouraged to settle in, observe, decompress, and realize they are safe.
Many dogs who are vocal, overstimulated, or constantly “on” in busier environments gradually begin relaxing once they realize they do not need to compete with noise or activity around them.
Learning how to relax is a valuable life skill for many dogs, and grooming can become part of building that confidence and emotional balance over time.
High Value Treats and a Fun Introduction
We keep a variety of high-value treats on hand, including favorites like Hawaiian Ahi Tuna Jerky made locally by Poi Dog, Smack freeze-dried food from Calvin & Susie’s, dehydrated beef liver, and chicken hearts. If your dog has dietary restrictions or a favorite treat from home, we always encourage you to bring a small amount with you.
At Kailua Pets, we are intentionally creating a different kind of grooming experience — a new normal where we slow things down, pay attention to the individual dog, and choose the path that best supports their physical comfort, emotional well-being, and long-term success with grooming.

What “Meeting Your Dog Where They Are” Really Means
Every dog experiences grooming differently.
Some walk in confident and ready to go. Others arrive unsure, overstimulated, highly social, sensitive, or simply uncertain about a new environment.
At Kailua Pets, we take time to help dogs settle in before grooming begins.
From the moment you walk through the door, the environment is intentionally designed to feel calm and welcoming. Soft calming essential oils are diffused in the background, and the entry area encourages a quieter arrival with space to sit, connect, and allow your dog to decompress before heading into the grooming area.
Rather than immediately rushing dogs onto a grooming table, we first take time to get acquainted. Once dogs have been here for a visit or two, many begin to run in, hop onto the table, wag their tails, and show us they are ready. That is one of our greatest joys.
A dog’s first visit often includes a gentle walk through the facility, with time to sniff, explore, and become familiar with the grooming and bathing areas before we begin. This helps many dogs feel more comfortable because they are able to process the environment at their own pace. It also helps them to connect with us and builds trust, which we continue to build through the grooming journey, always with lots of love and awareness of how they are doing for each step.

A Partnership For The Long Term
The most successful grooming experiences happen when groomer, owner, and dog are all working together.
Regular brushing and coat maintenance at home, gentle handling of feet and ears, calm routines, and open communication all contribute to a more positive grooming experience over time.
The more we understand about your dog’s personality, sensitivities, routines, and past experiences, the better we are able to support them as an individual.
Every dog’s journey is different.
Some dogs settle into grooming quickly. Others need a little more patience, support, and time along the way.
Wherever your dog is in that process, our goal is to help them continue moving forward in a way that feels safe, respectful, and sustainable throughout their life.
Kailua Pets was created to provide a thoughtful, relationship-based grooming experience built around patience, emotional awareness, skill, and genuine respect for the dog.
We are grateful to work with owners who value this approach and who want the very best for their dogs, both physically and emotionally.
Your Dog’s First Visit
Your dog’s first visit begins with a brief Meet & Greet at drop-off. Please plan a few extra minutes so your dog can sniff, settle, and begin getting comfortable with us.
We will talk through your dog’s grooming history, coat and skin needs, sensitivities, comfort level, and your goals for their care.
The first appointment may take a little extra time because we are beginning the trust-building process. For some dogs, that slower introduction continues over the first several visits as they learn that grooming here is calm, predictable, and safe.

Trust Is Built Over Time
Years ago, I had a dog who came to me every month for several years. He usually ran into the shop happy to see me, tail wagging, and ready to hop onto the grooming table.
One day, he arrived completely differently.
He stopped at the door, tried to leave, and looked worried in a way I had never seen from him before. We did not know what had unsettled him, but we knew he was clearly telling us that grooming was not the right choice for him that day.
His owner and I chose to reschedule.
Two days later, he came running in happy, relaxed, wagging, and ready for his normal groom.
That is what meeting a dog where they are can look like. It is not always convenient, but protecting trust matters. Our goal is a long-term relationship with your dog, not simply getting through one appointment.
The Joy We Are Building Toward
The goal is not for dogs to simply tolerate grooming.
Our greatest joy is seeing dogs begin to relax, trust, and enjoy the process.
Some dogs come in already happy and ready, tails wagging, excited to greet us and hop onto the table. Others build that confidence more gradually, one visit at a time.
When a dog who once felt unsure begins walking in with a soft body, a happy face, and a wagging tail, that is the heart of what we are building here.
Beautiful grooming matters.
But so does how your dog feels when they arrive, how they feel while they are here, and how they feel when they come back again.
That is what we mean by:
Beautiful grooms built on trust.

When Dogs Need Additional Support
As we move through the grooming process, there are times when we may discover that a dog needs additional support before grooming can safely continue.
Severe matting, heavily impacted ears, fragile or irritated skin, physical discomfort, or emotional overwhelm can all affect how safely and comfortably a dog is able to participate in grooming.
At Kailua Pets, we never want dogs pushed through an experience their body or emotional state is struggling to manage.
As groomers, we work very closely with dogs and often notice changes in skin, coat, ears, comfort level, or behavior. At the same time, we deeply respect the training and expertise of veterinarians and recognize that some situations require veterinary evaluation before grooming can safely continue.
Some dogs may also benefit from additional support outside of grooming itself, including handling practice, confidence-building, training support, or thoughtful scheduling adjustments as they learn to feel more comfortable with the process. We are not focused on simply getting through one appointment.
We are building a long-term relationship with your dog with the goal of helping them become more comfortable, confident, and successful with grooming throughout their life.

Medication, Sedation & Nervous Dogs
We understand that many owners worry about how their dog will handle grooming, especially if their dog has struggled in the past.
For that reason, we ask that you please do not give sedatives, calming medications, or supplements before grooming without first discussing them with us or scheduling a meet-and-greet beforehand.
While medication can sometimes be appropriate under veterinary guidance, it can also change how a dog experiences and responds to grooming.
Dogs may still feel anxious or uncomfortable while medicated, but their reactions can become delayed, muted, or less predictable. This can make it more difficult for the groomer to recognize stress early and may reduce our ability to truly connect with and support the dog emotionally during the process.
Whenever possible, we prefer to first give dogs the opportunity to build trust, form relationships, and learn that grooming can feel calm, safe, and manageable.
Many dogs who initially struggle with grooming go on to become very successful once they are given patience, consistency, compassion, and the space to settle into the experience at their own pace.
