FAQ

Every dog is different, and we want you to feel comfortable and informed before your visit.

Here are answers to common questions about our calm, relationship-based grooming approach, scheduling, coat care, and what to expect at Kailua Pets.

You can read more about our calm, trust-based approach on our Grooming Philosophy page.

At Kailua Pets, our tagline is: Beautiful grooms built on trust.

That means we care about the finished groom, and we also care deeply about how your dog experiences the process.

Yes. Many nervous, senior, sensitive, or special-needs dogs do very well in our quiet, low-stimulation environment.

We take time to understand your dog’s needs and create the safest, most supportive grooming plan we can. For some dogs, that may mean a slower introduction, shorter appointment, quieter scheduling, or working together over time to help them feel more comfortable with grooming.

Puppies are still learning how to be away from their owners, how to be handled, and how to feel comfortable in new environments.

Some puppies are ready for a full groom right away. Others need a slower introduction, shorter visit, meet-and-greet, bath-only appointment, or gradual handling practice before a full groom is the best choice.

Our goal is not just to get through one appointment. It is to help your puppy build confidence and trust with grooming for life.

Kailua Pets is located in a medical building, so we are thoughtful about maintaining a calm and quiet environment for the dogs in our care and the professionals nearby.

Some dogs are vocal at first, especially when they are unsure, excited, or learning a new routine. We take time to help them settle, build familiarity, and understand that grooming here is calmer and more predictable than many busy environments.

If a dog is having a difficult time settling, needs constant physical contact to feel comfortable, or becomes highly vocal, we may adjust the appointment, slow the process down, or create a better plan for another visit.

Our goal is always to support the dog’s comfort, protect the calm environment, and build long-term success with grooming.

Each dog receives attentive, individualized care from their groomer or grooming assistant throughout their visit. While multiple dogs may be in the salon, the environment is intentionally calm, organized, and low-stimulation.

Dogs may rest quietly between steps when needed, but they are not placed into a loud kennel room or assembly-line environment.

Yes, but differently than many salons. Our kennels are quiet, cushioned resting spaces where dogs can gently finish drying or relax between steps. No loud kennel rooms, no overcrowding, and no stressful holding areas, with a soft cooling blanket in each space.

Most dogs relax better once their person has said goodbye, but you are always welcome to walk your dog in and get them settled with us before you go.

Timing depends on size, coat, and services. Smaller dogs typically take 1.5–2 hours, larger or
longer-coated dogs 2–3 hours, and specialized services like hand stripping may take longer. We’ll give you an estimated timeframe at check-in.

Matting can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful for dogs, especially when it is close to the skin or located around sensitive areas like the ears, legs, tail, or face.

If matting is minor, we may be able to work through it carefully. If matting is significant, the kindest and safest option may be a shorter trim, coat removal, additional time, or a revised grooming plan.

We will always prioritize your dog’s comfort and safety over preserving coat length.

As groomers, we may notice changes in skin, coat, ears, comfort level, or odor during the grooming process. We do not diagnose medical conditions, and we deeply respect the role of your veterinarian.

If we see symptoms that could make grooming uncomfortable or unsafe, such as fragile skin, heavy ear buildup, strong odor, excess flaking, irritation, or impacted/matted ears, we may recommend veterinary evaluation before grooming can safely continue.

This helps protect your dog’s comfort and the health of other dogs in our care.

Please do not give sedatives, calming medications, or supplements before grooming without first discussing it with us or your veterinarian.

Medication can sometimes be appropriate under veterinary guidance, but it can also change how a dog experiences and responds to grooming. Some dogs may still feel anxious or uncomfortable, but their signals become delayed or harder to read. It can also make it harder for us to connect with your dog and build trust during the grooming process.

Whenever possible, we prefer to first meet your dog as they are, build trust, and create a plan that helps them feel more comfortable over time.

Occasionally, as we move through the grooming process, we may discover that a dog needs additional support before grooming can safely continue.

This may happen because of severe matting, skin or ear concerns, emotional overwhelm, physical discomfort, or a dog’s inability to settle safely in the environment.

When that happens, we will communicate with you and help determine the best next step. Our focus is always the long-term comfort, safety, and success of your dog.

Our favorite win-win interval is monthly. Our monthly clients benefit from always being clean, looking stylish, and we reward the monthly scheduling with an additional free brushout or nail trim in between grooming sessions. Beach-loving dogs, curly coats, and long-coated breeds benefit from more frequent care to keep their skin and coat healthy and comfortable.

We select from premium, low-fragrance products known for quality and coat health, and we adjust based on your dog’s coat type and sensitivities. If your vet has recommended specific products, we integrate those.

Yes. We are happy to partner with your veterinarian on medicated baths, skin conditions, or special care instructions so grooming supports your dog’s overall health plan. Our lead groomer is a Certified Canine Esthetician and has completed extra training in skin and coat health and works with our island veterinary clinics.

We have one designated parking space for brief drop-off and pick-up only. Please do not leave your vehicle parked there for an extended period.

Please also avoid parking directly in front of the shop, as this is a through street and vehicles may be ticketed. If you need to leave your vehicle, please use nearby public parking.

We will send a text message from our system, this will be from the same number that your reminders are from, not the regular shop number.

Because we schedule one-on-one style appointments, cancellations have a significant impact on our day. We appreciate as much notice as possible if you need to reschedule. Multiple short notice cancelations or no-shows may result in the need to prepay for services.
